Some state legislatures only needed a few seats to flip to end gerrymandering in the state and to safeguard the congressional map...which was going to be redrawn in 2021 after the results of the 2020 census were tabulated. Redistricting happens only once every ten year, so the consequences of these "downballot" races were going to be lasting.
